Tenses คือ รูปกริยาที่บอกความหมาย และเวลาของการกระทำนั้น แบ่งออกเป็น

1. The Simple Tense

Present Simple

รูปกริยา Subject + Verb เติม -s หรือ –es

- The earth moves round the sun. (โลกโคจรรอบดวงอาทิตย์)

- The sun rises in the east. (ดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นทางทิศตะวันออก)

- He gets up early everyday. (เขาตื่นแต่เช้าทุกวัน)

Past Simple

รูปกริยา Subject + Verb ช่องที่ 2

- He arrived at four o'clock yesterday morning. (เขามาถึงตอนตีสี่เช้าวานนี้)

- She went to the movies last night. (เมื่อคืนนี้ หล่อนไปดูหนัง)

- He came to her place several times a week before he went to England.

(เขามาบ้านหล่อนสัปดาห์ละหลายครั้งก่อนที่เขาจะไปอังกฤษ)

Future Simple

รูปกริยา Subject + will (หรือ shall) + Verb ช่องที่ 1

- I shall be twenty-nine tomorrow. (พรุ่งนี้ผมจะมีอายุ(ครบ) 29 ปี)

- "You'll never pass the examination." คุณจะสอบไม่ได้แน่

- Will you help me carry this bag? (คุณจะช่วยกรุณาถือกระเป๋านี้ได้ไหม)

2.The Continuous

(Progressive) Tenses

Present Continuous

รูปกริยา Subject + is (am, are) + (verb+ing).

- The sun is shining. (ดวงอาทิตย์กำลังส่องแสง)

- The bees are humming. (ฝูงผึ้งกำลังส่งเสียงหึ่ง)

- What are you doing? (คุณกำลังทำอะไร)

Past Continuous (Progressive)

รูปกริยา Subject+ was (were) + (verb+ing)

- He was working in Bloomingon while I was working in Bangkok.

(เขากำลังทำงานอยู่ในเมืองบลูมมิงตัน ในขณะที่ผมกำลังทำงานอยู่ในกรุงเทพฯ)

- It was raining when I came home.

(เมื่อผมกลับบ้านนั้น ฝนกำลังตกอยู่)

- While the man was looking at the picture, a thief stole his purse.

(ขณะที่ชายคนนั้นกำลังดูรูปภาพอยู่ ขโมยได้ลักเอากระเป๋าสตางค์ของเขาไป)

Future Continuous (Progressive)

รูปกริยา Subject + will (shall) be + (verb+ing).

- I'll be working all day tomorrow.

(พรุ่งนี้ผมจะทำงานทั้งวัน)

- He will be sleeping at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning.

(เขา(คง)จะกำลังหลับอยู่ ณ เวลา 7 นาฬิกาพรุ่งนี้เช้า)

- He'll be busy working when we call.

(เมื่อเราไปหาเขา เขาคงกำลังยุ่งอยู่กับงาน)

3.The Perfect Tenses

Present Perfect

รูปกริยา Subject + has (have) + verb3.

- He has lived there since his father died.

(เขาอยู่ที่นั่นมาตั้งแต่บิดาของถึงแก่กรรม)

- Have you ever been to New York City?

(คุณเคยไปนครนิวยอร์กไหม)

- I have finished the book.

(ผมอ่านหนังสือนั้นจบแล้ว)

Past Perfect

รูปกริยา Subject + had + verb3

- When we got to the field, the football match had already started.

(เมื่อเราไปถึงสนามนั้น การแข่งขันฟุตบอลได้เริ่มขึ้นแล้ว)

- I didn't go to the cinema because I had already seen the film.

(ผมไม่ไปดูหนัง เพราะผมดูหนังเรื่องนั้นมาแล้ว)

- I had lost my pen and I was unable to do the exercises.

(ผมทำปากกาหาย ผมจึงไม่สามารถทำแบบฝึกหัดได้)

Future Perfect

รูปกริยา Subject + will have + verb3

- They will have finished the work by next week.

(ถึงสัปดาห์หน้าพวกเขาก็คงจะเสร็จงานนั้นแล้ว)

- All these roses will have died before Christmas.

(กุหลาบนี้คงจะตายก่อนถึงวันคริสต์มาส)

- She will have been in England be the end of March.

(เมื่อถึงสิ้นเดือนมีนาคมหล่อนคงจะอยู่ในอังกฤษเรียบร้อยแล้ว)

4. The Perfect Continuous Tenses

Present Perfect Continuous

รูปกริยา Subject + has(have) been + (verb+ing)

Bill has been living in Bangkok since 1975.

(บิลอยู่ในกรุงเทพมาตั้งแต่ปี 1975)

He has been working on the problem for two hours so far.

(เขาทำโจทย์มาเป็นเวลา 2 ชั่วโมงแล้ว)

Past Perfect Continuous

รูปกริยา Subject + had been + (verb+ing).

- When I got to the meeting, the lecturer had spoken for half an hour.

(เมื่อผมไปถึงที่ประชุมนั้น ผู้บรรยายได้พูดมาเป็นเวลาครึ่งชั่วโมงแล้ว)

- The telephone had been ringing for five minutes before it was answered.

(โทรศัพท์ได้ฟัง (ติดต่อกันมา) เป็นเวลาห้านทีก่อนที่จะมีผู้รับ)

Future Perfect Continuous

รูปกริยา Subject + will(shall) + have been + (verb+ing)

- By eleven o'clock I shall have been working for three hours.

(เมื่อถึงเวลา 11 นาฬิกา ผมก็จะทำงาน (ติดต่อกันมา) ครบสามชั่วโมง (และผมก็จะทำงานต่อไปอีก) )

- On August 12th we shall have been living in this house exactly four years.

(เมื่อถึงวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม เราก็จะอยู่บ้านหลังนี้ครบ 4 ปีพอดี (และจะอยู่ต่อไปอีก))

I shall finish this book in January, when I shall have written this book seven months.

(ผมจะเขียนหนังสือนี้จบในเดือนมกราคม(ที่จะถึงนี้) ซึ่ง (ในตอนนั้น) ผมก็จะเรียนหนังสือนี้มาเป็นเวลา 7 เดือน)
